Because when Riley wakes up, I know what to do. I feed him. I cuddle him. I settle him. I rock him if he needs it. I’m his mum. I’ve got this part. But there are moments in the middle of the night where I wish someone else was awake too. Not necessarily to help. Not even to talk. Just to understand. Because 3am feels very different from 3pm. At 3pm, you’re tired but the world is moving. There are people driving around. Shops are open. Friends are awake. The sun is out. At 3am, the whole world seems to disappear. It’s just you, your baby and the sound of your own thoughts. And when you’re exhausted, those thoughts can get very loud. Is this normal? Am I doing enough? When will I sleep again? Why does this feel so hard? Then I look at all those little lights. And I remember that the world hasn’t actually disappeared. There are mums awake. Lots of them. Some are feeding. Some are rocking. Some are cuddling. Some are probably crying. Some are probably scrolling through their phones just trying to feel connected to another human being. And suddenly the night feels a little less lonely. I don’t need to know their stories. I don’t need them to tell me what to do. I just need that little reminder that someone else is there. Because motherhood can be incredibly isolating. You can love your baby with every part of yourself and still need connection. You can be grateful and exhausted. You can be happy and lonely. You can adore your life and still have moments where you think, “I really wish someone understood how hard this is.” So if you’re awake tonight, I hope you look for the lights. There are mums awake with you. And even if you’ve never met, even if they’re thousands of kilometres away, you’re sharing this little moment of motherhood together. You’re not the only one awake.
