Trusokova is so heartbreaking. They were best friends from the time they were 11, closer than most siblings, they are the ONLY two in the world who know what the other went through and will ever be able to relate, they were the first two women to launch the quad revolution, they won every medal together, cried together, endured everything together, and at the end, they thought their friendship would persevere. That Kamila would win. But she didn’t, and Anna had the horrible position of winning everything she’d ever wanted, while robbing Sasha of everything SHE ever wanted. I don’t think anybody from a first world nation, anybody not doing competitive sports in a developing country with an authoritarian regime, will EVER understand just how important that win was. A gold medal isn’t just a symbol for them like it is for US athletes. It’s freedom. Anna’s sons will never be drafted. Sasha’s brothers, and son, will be. Anna won the Olympic incentive, and was gifted apartments, cars etc. She has access to free healthcare, medical treatment in Germany paid for by the Russian government. Her family does too. She will never have to work again. Her children will have access to the best education, the best healthcare, the best job opportunities. They will never struggle. She will be allowed to travel anywhere she wants without intervention by the Russian government. And be gaining all that herself, she robbed it from Sasha. I can’t imagine how they must’ve felt, knowing that one of them winning all that meant taking it from the other. And people wonder why she looked so broken, wonder why Sasha cried. It is such a privilege to not understand why they were so devastated, but for Americans to mock them over it… they will never understand that feeling of winning the ability to be able to save your family from war, only to condemn your best friend’s. To know that you will be able to access medical treatments to help your mother if she ever gets cancer, to get surgeries for your broken body so you no longer have to live in pain, but know that your best friend’s brothers will be drafted and sent to the frontlines one day because of it.
