@theholdernessfamily: I wish we heard some of these phrases growing up 💛 Hear more about how we can help neurodivergent kids learn on this week’s podcast with @Learn with Dr. Emily - Link in bio! #neurodivergent
I like this! But not the interest one at school. We all have to figure out how to get through things we’re not interested in.

“Start being curious about why they’re not paying attention” is perhaps the best advice ever heard!

I had a student who could only comprehend what he was reading if he was moving. He would pace the back of my classroom, and complete a read-aloud or assignment beautifully. Had another who had to basically make herself a burrito to do math. Blanket, big sweater, scarf- something wrapped around her. When they learned what they needed to be successful, I alway tried to accommodate. But I was a special ed teacher.

I was told your handwriting is so horrible you know you will never be a doctor 🤦🏼♀️second grade teacher well she was right but I did become a nurse. I have tons of stuff she was so mean and tried to get me kicked out of her class that’s when we found out I had ADHD and I did go to a special class for kids that needed more advanced classes

My son with ADHD is working so much harder than the neurotypical kids near him. He’s exhausted by the end of the day. We had a ton of luck with sports recreational therapy. Through play he learned how to sustain focus for longer periods of time. I highly recommend it.

For the first one I let my students have fidgets- I just discuss with the whole class about the difference between a fidget and a toy (it’s a toy when it’s a distraction and not helping focus) and tell them that if it becomes a toy they will have to put it away. I don’t have problems and it lets them move and focus.

I told a kid in my 2nd hour (6th graders) that he could stand up if it helped him focus, as long as it wasn’t distracting to others. He did. And so did like 7 more kids. 😂. All but one sat back down within 2 min but that one definitely needed it and they probably all needed a stretch.

I changed the “focus” one with my son. Never tell a neurodivergent kid looks like they are not focusing, they MIGHT be focusing and n their own way. Now I ask him questions about what I said so I know if he WAS focusing in his way or if he was not. His kindergarten teacher used to say he was learning things through osmosis. Just being in the room he was learning it and picking it up.

Two things can be true ⭐️ :
“Be still” requires context. If we’ve just done something to rev us up I may say “let’s settle or we need to settle”. Settle for my students doesn’t mean “sit in a chair and don’t move” it likely means, stop rolling on the floor and kicking your friends (on accident).

every kids 100% looks different. I teach my kids to support each other by understanding that another students 100% may not match their 100% and depending on what has happened in their life their 100% effort could change. It could feel like they are being lazy but you dont know that their dog died and their car broke down. Give grace always and seek to understand.

I teach k- Do you want to get up and move around and try again? It feels hard right now, that’s ok, it’s how I know your brain is learning and growing. Do you want me to stay next to you while you work?
