@automatedearth: Old vid I never posted on my main👀 || The October Revolution of 1917 || The Russian Revolution was one of the most important political events of the twentieth century, transforming Russia from an autocratic empire into the first major communist state. A central figure in this transformation was Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks, who believed that Russia needed a revolutionary change based on the ideas of Karl Marx. Marx argued that society was divided into social classes, particularly the wealthy capitalist class, known as the bourgeoisie, and the working class, known as the proletariat. According to Marxist theory, workers were exploited by wealthy owners who controlled businesses, land and industry, and eventually the workers would overthrow the capitalist system and create a classless society. Communism aimed to abolish private ownership of the major means of production and replace it with collective or state ownership, with the long-term goal of creating a society where wealth and resources were shared more equally. Lenin adapted Marx's ideas to the conditions of Russia, arguing that a disciplined revolutionary party was needed to lead workers and bring about a socialist revolution. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Russia was ruled by Tsar Nicholas II, an autocratic ruler who held enormous political power. Russia had serious economic and social problems, including widespread poverty, poor working conditions, unequal land ownership and political repression. Most of the population were peasants, while industrial workers in growing cities often worked long hours for low wages. Russia's involvement in the First World War made these problems much worse. Millions of soldiers were killed, wounded or captured, food shortages became severe, inflation increased and confidence in the Tsar collapsed. In February 1917, mass protests and strikes broke out in Petrograd, and soldiers increasingly refused to support the government. Nicholas II abdicated, ending centuries of Romanov rule. A Provisional Government was established, but it continued Russia's involvement in the war and struggled to solve the country's economic and social problems. At the same time, workers and soldiers formed councils called soviets, creating a situation in which political power was divided between the Provisional Government and the soviets. Lenin returned to Russia in April 1917 and presented his famous April Theses, calling for “peace, land and bread” and demanding that the Bolsheviks oppose the Provisional Government. He argued that the revolution should continue and that power should pass to the soviets. The Bolsheviks gained support during 1917 because they promised to end the war, provide land to peasants and address food shortages. In October 1917, the Bolsheviks organised an armed uprising in Petrograd and seized important government buildings and communication centres. The Provisional Government was overthrown, and Lenin became the leading figure in the new Bolshevik government. The revolution did not immediately create the communist society imagined by Marx. Instead, Lenin's government introduced socialist policies and began transferring major industries and banks into state control.
