So you didn’t use the fence because it wasn’t a straight cut, but still had the table saw that can’t really cut curves. Now instead of one gap, you have several? Invest in a bandsaw or rough cut it straight and then sand it to the line for a better fit.

scribing knife is like $10, replace the pencil with the knife, benefits are pre scored cut line for cleaner cuts, and the tape gets cut too so you can pull the tape off the waste side to see your cut line easier. its absolutely not necessary, what you did works, but the quality of life improvement with the knife is fantastic.
