I think one of the biggest misunderstandings surrounding tinnitus is the assumption that if it started after loud noise exposure, the damage must be permanent and therefore so is the tinnitus. But "noise-induced" only tells us something about what happened around the time the tinnitus started. It doesn't tell us which mechanisms are now generating or maintaining it. Noise can affect way more than only the structures responsible for hearing, and even within the auditory system, tinnitus isn't a direct measure of how much permanent damage has occurred. Sometimes noise is the primary injury. Sometimes it's just one contributor among many. And sometimes it is just the final stressor that pushes an already struggling system past the point at which it can compensate. So yes: tinnitus that starts after noise exposure can still improve significantly and, in many cases, resolve completely. #tinnitus #fyp
