as a 2L: do your best but cold calling doesn’t save you. Everything is based on the exam (+ the midterm if you have one) so try and find what works for you to know the main rules and practice writing/mcq’s (based on what the professor wants) so you can do well on those. if you bomb a cold call but ace the exam you will get a great grade, can’t say the same for the other way around !

Honestly reading is minimally helpful hahaha, the hack is finding an outline from that professor and following along during class that way you know what the prof focuses on

IRAC is never enough! My briefs go 1. parties 2. procedural history 3. facts 4. issue 5. rule 6. reasoning 7. holding. Within the facts I differentiate each party’s argument.

Briefing is for YOU. If your professor cold calls a specific way then you brief that way. For my classes irac is exactly what my professors ask about 🤷♀️every professor/course is different

1L year was many years ago now but yea the IRAC stuff is for legal writing and maybe a bar exam essay answer. For Socratic method in class the biggest thing is to read and have an idea of the holding and why they held that way. The professor is just going to try to expand upon that with the hypos they present in class

I stopped briefing pretty early. It’s not supposed to make sense this early. As long as you crack the code at some point in first year you’re fine, you don’t have to know how to do it correctly and efficiently on day one.

find an old outline, print it out & use class to edit it + write what the professor cares abt down, the only thing that matters is the final 💜
