As you see in the video, we start with a single smooth wave (the fundamental frequency). Then, we start stacking odd harmonics on top of it: the 3rd, the 5th, the 7th, and so on. Why does this matter for us in Ham Radio? Here is the “aha!” moment: Nature hates a straight line. To make those sharp, square corners you see in the video, you need an infinite number of high-frequency harmonics. In your Transmitter: If your audio is clipping or your amplifier is overdriven, you are essentially “squaring off” your signal. This creates those extra harmonic layers shown in the video, which then fly out of your antenna as interference (RFI) for your neighbors. In your SDR: Your waterfall display is literally this video running in reverse. Your radio takes the messy “Wave Component Stacking” and untangles it so you can see every individual signal on the band. In CW: If your keying is too “hard” (square), you’re sending out all those extra harmonic components, causing “key clicks” across the frequency. The takeaway?
