Well, most of the staff at an underground mine are drillers. They drill the holes with rock drills about an inch wide in a particular pattern such that the explosives placed in those holes are set off in a particular order and the resulting explosion creates a roughly cube shaped hole in the rock. The geologist comes down after and takes samples and describes the rock face so that you can keep following the vein of ore you're after in the most efficient way possible. After the geologist is done the drillers will shovel the ore into an ore cart, and once they release the brake on the cart it rolls downhill to the entrance where it's taken to an ore house and then maybe refined at a mill somewhere nearby, while the excess rock from the ore, called tailings, is piled up by the entrance of the mine to prepare for when the mine is eventually closed and then backfilled with rock and sealed off to prevent environmental pollution. The people driving trucks are transporting ore around on the surface. Weirdly enough October Skies is probably the movie I would recommend for the most realistic depiction of a mine that I've seen, although that was coal and all my experience is with non-ferrous metals.

Hard Rock mining (through granite) consists of: clean the face of the rock, spray paint the drill pattern on the face, drill the face, load explosives, blast, wash the "muck" pile to neutralize/dilute any left over explosives, scoop the muck with a front end loader, load a truck, take it to surface. Rinse and repeat.

I sample at mines! They drive big equipment that drills/digs/scoops/hauls. They blow up a section of rock, scoop it up in a loader, dump that in a haul truck, the haul truck dumps it in a crusher to make the rocks smaller, then that is sent through more crushers to make varying rock sizes to sell. A lot of times the employees are listening to music or podcasts or movies while in the equipment and they play like drive/load simulator all day

I built tunnels which sometimes is similar to mining and sometimes not. I worked on a Brokk. One guy would run the Brokk, the other guy would spray water on where he was chipping to keep the dust down. After a while a front end loader and a dump truck would show up and we'd shovel all the rocks into the bucket of the loader and they'd dump it into the dump truck. It was mind numbingly boring. We worked 12 hour shifts, and in the winter we almost never saw the sun. It was loud, wet, cold, and dirty. A coffee truck would come down in the morning and we usually just ate lunch in the hole because by the time you climbed out lunch would be over.
