If it doesn’t involve giving soon to ex SIL. Then what does it matter? It’s not affecting your combined finances within your family. So basically he wants you to choose sides. When in reality you can do both sides. You won’t badmouth his Brother. Nor will you spill any confidences between them. You are not a tattletale. That should help resolve some of the issues. Most ex spouses have issues with friends that do not choose one side or the due to giving the ex information they don’t want them to know.

Her husband is centering the pain of the man experiencing consequences while treating the women responding to his behavior as the ones committing the betrayal. I wouldn’t trust him after this.

Your husband is questioning you doing the right thing?? That’s troublesome. I’m sure he’s in the habit of enabling his brother, but you don’t have to play any part in that. Always do the right thing. You are your own woman and I, for one, really appreciate you for supporting her.

It's more important to help a woman, a friend, who's been wronged by a man than it is to follow a command from a man. Always.

My husband does not get to dictate my behavior. He is welcome to tell me he doesn't like something, but he doesn't get to tell me to stop.

I echo the sentiment that the husband has no standing to tell her not to be supportive of someone she considered family and the person who was the injured party. I would be concerned with his values with him feeling the need to align with someone who is clearly in the wrong and trying to force her to do the same.

my question: is a man who won't hold his own brother accountable a man worth having a life with? I could never tie myself to someone with such low morals

Can’t imagine telling my wife not to help her friend. I’d probably be helping my brother and we’d never talk about it.

More importantly do you want to be married to a man who thinks cheating and alcohol abuse are ok?

I wonder if she should be afraid her husband sees his brother as a victim in the situation while this woman is saying he deserves the consequences of divorce. It sounds like this couple already has a fundamental difference in attitudes and values about something really important, whatever the specifics are.

Very solid advice sometimes seeing this and not revealing what you’re doing for someone else is saying more I tell my spouse often. I love you, but I don’t need to know all the details of your life. If you want to help somebody help them kudos to you I don’t need to know that be careful how you share information with your spouse a very solid advice again I love this influencer.

this I disagree with, respectfully. you need to prioritize your relationship over that of someone elses. family first, always. that's not to say the brother in law isn't deserving, but we learn and we grow (hopefully) by making mistakes. remember, you are only hearing half the story too. I believe anything more than being a shoulder to cry on is off limits to both you and your husband if it may cause an issue between you two. just an opinion.

I would tell my husband that he dznt own my time or empathy and I’ll help anyone I damn well plz. He can stay mad if that’s the price of him figuring out that I’m a person and not property.

My brother left his wife—left her high and dry. In one day, left town, leaving her in an apartment she couldn’t afford on her own, with no family nearby but me. My roommate and I helped her to manage her heartbreak and situation. Boy, was my brother mad at me. Years later, SIL and I are the best of friends and I haven’t spoken to my brother in years. SIL moved on and I was invited to her 2nd marriage wedding!!!

i'd ask hubby if he's pro cheating and alcoholism? I'd make it crystal clear his brother is not the victim and i won't be treating him as such. I'd be very firm that i will be helping SIL as i see fit, period.

So I’ve been divorced and the truth that I learned in my situation and observing others is that people always take sites. Most of the time I think that people take sides against women because the man plays the victim, and the woman is characterized as “crazy.“ So I would be sensitive to that sort of rhetoric from your husband and making sure that he is held accountable for how he is portraying the situation. Moreover, I would encourage you to not take sides. Consider what your values in your character are and then act with internal consistency. You can love your sister-in-law who has been abused in her marriage and support her emotionally and then other ways to free herself from an abuser. You can love your brother-in-law and support him in getting the hell he needs to understand how he mistreated his wife. You can have relationships and be friendly with both of them as long as you have integrity in your actions. And I would encourage you to require integrity from your husband because unfortunately, I think you may start to see some gaps in his character and misaligned values. This is a great opportunity to work on those issues. Unfortunately, you’re going to get a lot of backlash and he needs to be standing by your side to say that you are your own person autonomy and you can make decisions about how you proceed without judgment from him or his family.

If my brother started cheating on his wife, I would be helping her. She’s been in my life for 10 years and if my brother hurts her, he deserves what’s coming.
