My doc was way behind seeing his patients. I went in and sat with one of our patients and just talked to him for about an hour. I didnโt learn until a few years later that his visit was to tell us โgoodbyeโ. He was going to unalive himself later that day. He said just sitting and talking with me changed his mind. I will never forget that and always treat my patients with the same grace. Itโs absolutely true that you never know what someone else is carrying.

the mom came in for her son's 6 month check up. I could tell something was off. turns out her husband has been beating her and the child and this was the only time she had away from him. she cried on my shoulder as I held the baby and they both fell asleep on me. my boss walked in when he noticed I was gone nearly an hour. I sat in there through my lunch break. they made it out safely later that night.

When a long standing patient knew he was dying and came to the office frail and tired. He hugged us all and cried with us while he said goodbye. We literally stopped EVERYTHING for 45 minutes and just to be with him. He passed less than 24 hours later. The office closed the day of his service so we could all attend. That was 10 years ago amd I think about it daily โค๏ธ

I work in fam med and I called one of my well child visits back ( it was one of my last few week seeing pts as I was about to go on maternity leave) as soon as the kid saw me he ran up to me and poked my belly I stood there laughing bc i genuinely thought it was funny and cute his mom felt so bad and kept apologizing to me and the provider after I left the room. It was so wholesome and cute and my baby thought so too as she started moving all around

A patient asked me not to tell them when I was about to stick the needle in for a blood draw. I said โoh okay, are you scared of needles?โ They replied โI used to be a heroin addictโ. Iโve never asked a patient that again๐ซช

had an elderly lady come in in 2021 and just kept rubbing my arm and touching me when I was rooming her. she said I was the first human contact she had in over a year. not even her family would go see her. they dropped the groceries off on her porch and left. needless to say, she left the office with lots of hugs๐ฅฐ

I had a little girl she was about 6 brought 3 stuffed animals to her appointment then puts a handful of change on my desk and smiled. mom said she wants to pay for you to give her animals a checkup. so I did. afterwards I pretended to type on my computer and said well it looks like this is their well stuffy visit so no co-pay today.
