Many products are plastered with claims of health benefits. We have all seen messages like - ‘gut-healthy’, ‘high protein’, ‘high fiber’ etc on the front of packages. But these health claims are marketing tactics designed to influence us to buy, and don’t give us the overall picture of what’s in the product. The term for this is ‘health halos’ – claims designed to convince you that a product is healthier than it actually is. In this clip @theguthealthmd is using the term Health Washing which is essentially the same thing - the misleading practice of marketing food or products to appear healthier than they actually are. These halos rely on buzzwords, imagery, or claims that highlight a single positive aspect of the product – such as ‘low fat’, ‘high protein’, or in the case of what this clip is talking about ‘high fiber’– while distracting from less healthy elements like added sugars, artificial additives or high sodium content. Dr Will Bulsiewicz @theguthealthmd is a world renowned gut health doctor and what he’s saying is so important for us to realise. The companies that make these ultra processed packaged goods don’t have our health as their priority... the only reason they are adding these cheap forms of fiber to their products is because it allows them to then plaster the health claim “high fiber” on their pack. This messaging preys on people who know that they’re not eating enough fiber and are likely to be influenced by a high fiber claim on a product. But as Dr B says in this clip, is this where we should be getting our fiber from? No... whole foods is where we will be getting the health benefits of fiber rich foods from. This episode of @maxlugavere podcast is a brilliant listen for anyone who wants to hear the whole thing (episode no.484) What do you think? I’d love to hear in the comments #ultraprocessedfoods #readlabels
