If you texted me and never heard back, expect a reply from me soon. On the topic of isolation, it’s something I’ve struggled with my whole life. There are many people whom I care about deeply who’ve reached out to me and I’ve yet to reply. A few missed texts/calls is how it starts, but eventually things stack up. I don’t know how I ever formed a habit like this one, but I think it’d be good if more people spoke publically about their own struggles with isolation. I often see bold statements like, “If they haven’t texted you back, you should 100% take it personally because that person is trying to tell you something or doesn’t respect your time” That’s simply not true. In certain cases, I totally get it and I feel the same. But, I don’t think it’s fair to blanket project that on the world. When my isolation gets bad, I’m intentionally ignoring texts - not reading them, not opening them, nothing. Sometimes texts from people I love and miss more than anything. This doesn’t come from a place of superiority or social manipulation, it comes from a deep sense of not wanting to bother/upset/drag someone down. Does it ultimately make sense? Absolutely not. Is it rude? I would say so! But, this behavior doesn’t come from a place that I’m proud of and my heart is still filled with love. Some take this personally and I don’t fault them for that, the ones who don’t take it personally- I love even more. I just think it’d be good if we considered things like this aren’t so black and white. Nobody who deviates from social norms should expect understanding or forgiveness from people, but on the same token they’d have a much easier time facing their struggles if they felt less condemned or judged. I’m speaking for myself, but I know there are others out there who struggle making sense of this even more than I do, who maybe have less experience pulling themselves out of the gutter and knowing things can be okay again. And I want them to know that there’s hope. And for those who don’t struggle with this, I want them to know that they have much more power to affect positive change on the world than they think. It’s easy to think you aren’t able to impact those around you when you don’t see immediate results. But, when you truly give your energy away to the world without expecting results, and you find trust in that process. You will be amazed in the ways that energy is reciprocated. It’s not shiny or flashy, but the world does an incredible job of rewarding the positive energy we donate to it without strings attached.
