Stopping GLP-1 Treatment: What the 22% Higher Heart-Attack, Stroke and Death Risk Study Actually Found 💉 THINKING ABOUT STOPPING MOUNJARO, WEGOVY OR OZEMPIC? HERE’S WHAT THE “22% HIGHER HEART RISK” STUDY ACTUALLY FOUND. The video gives you the main message. Here is the extra context worth saving. This was NOT a trial of people using injections purely for weight loss. Researchers used US Veterans Affairs health records and compared: • 132,551 people with type 2 diabetes who started a GLP-1 receptor agonist • 201,136 people with type 2 diabetes who started a sulfonylurea That is 333,687 people in total. The average GLP-1 user was about 66 years old and more than 9 in 10 were men. So we should be careful about applying the exact percentages to every person using Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic today. The outcome researchers tracked was a COMBINED measure of: • heart attack • stroke • death from any cause Compared with people who stayed continuously on GLP-1 treatment: • 6 months off treatment was associated with about 4% higher risk • 1 year off was associated with 14% higher risk • 2 years off was associated with 22% higher risk The key word is ASSOCIATED. This was a target-trial emulation using healthcare data. It was not a randomised trial where people were assigned to stop treatment. That means the study cannot prove that stopping the medicine itself caused every extra event. People stop treatment for many reasons — side effects, cost, supply problems, illness, treatment burden and other health changes — and those factors can also affect risk. There was another useful finding. People who stayed on GLP-1 treatment continuously for three years had an 18% lower risk of the combined cardiovascular outcome than the sulfonylurea comparison group — roughly four fewer major events per 100 people over three years. So the practical question is not: “Should everybody stay on these injections forever?” It is: “WHY am I taking this medicine, what benefit am I getting from it, and what is the plan if I stop?” If you are considering stopping because: • you reached your weight target • side effects are becoming difficult • you cannot afford treatment • supply is unreliable • your diabetes has changed • you simply do not want to continue tell your prescriber WHY. The next step may be different for each person. And remember the brands are not interchangeable in their licensed uses. Ozempic is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. Wegovy is semaglutide licensed for weight management and can also reduce cardiovascular-event risk in certain people with overweight or obesity. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GIP and GLP-1 pathways and is licensed for type 2 diabetes and weight management. If you are seriously unwell from treatment, do not continue simply because a headline has frightened you about stopping. Severe persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to the back, needs urgent medical assessment because pancreatitis is a recognised serious risk. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can also cause significant dehydration. 💚 MY PHARMACIST MESSAGE: Don’t make a long-term medicine decision from a scary headline. Understand WHY you are taking it. Understand WHAT benefit it is giving you. And if it needs to stop, make a plan for what happens next. #Mounjaro #Wegovy #Ozempic #GLP1 #MedicationSafety
Spending our last PEI day in Cavendish was a no-brainer. We started off at Mariners Cove, headed to the boardwalk, and enjoyed an afternoon on the beach. There was no way I was ending our last official day of vacation by cooking dinner. So, we decided to head back to Charlottetown to see what we could find. Needless to say, we are nearly packed, ready for bed, and will begin the trek home tomorrow. #momlife #MomsofTikTok #relatable #mom #thursday
