@safetynerd25: Nobody really prepares you for your first day on a new site. You show up, everything is unfamiliar, and there’s this pressure to look like you know exactly what you’re doing. I’ve been there, so let me save you some stress. The biggest mistake new safety officers make is trying to prove themselves too fast. They walk in and immediately start calling out every little thing. All that does is put the whole site on the defensive before anyone even knows your name. Do the opposite. Spend your first few days trying to understand the site before you try to correct it Start by getting familiar with the key safety documents. The risk assessment and method statement will tell you the hazards and how the work is supposed to be done. The HSE plan and policy show you how safety is meant to be managed and what the company has committed to. And the emergency procedures and permit systems tell you what happens when things go wrong. You don’t need to memorise them. You just need to know what exists and where to find it. Then actually walk the site with fresh eyes. Watch how people work. Notice the flow, the busy areas, where people take shortcuts. A lot of the time, what’s written in the documents and what’s happening on the ground are two different things, and learning to spot that gap is a real skill. Talk to the workers too. The people doing the job every day know that site better than any document ever will. Ask them questions. Listen more than you speak. You’ll earn more respect in a week of listening than a month of writing people up. And give yourself some grace. You are not supposed to have all the answers on day one. The good ones aren’t the people who know everything. They’re the ones who stay curious and keep learning. So take your time. Understand the site first. my first day wasn't too bad..ive been a nurse 2r yrs n transitioned from the medic on site to safety..the Mgr I already knew so it made it easy to just be quiet n ask questions..he was great about showing everything but not too quickly also..that really helped so much..its 4 months now n I still dont say a whole lot..especially if im unsure, I will call our mgr..n we have an amazing team which makes all the difference in the world!! i am ao grateful I chose to make the change!!

You are so right in everything you just said!!! That’s exactly what I did except one thing- I spent a WEEK walking 10th floor down to 1st learning what the major equipment was on each floor and what it does and looking at SOP’s and asking questions. One of the team members told me “ that would gain the respect of the team member’s” and he didn’t lie. When I come around we chill and talk and cut up lol and that makes me feel good because they know I’m there to look out for them, and we are here to look out for each other, not just to write them up. 😎😁❤️I LOVE MY JOB!!! SO BLESSED!!!

I understand your point. Don’t try to be a hero on your first day at a new site. First, observe, understand the documents, talk to the workers, understand the site system, and then make corrections professionally where needed.
