I’m an American living overseas, and no, I don’t believe Chinese cars are better than American cars. They offer features that may look innovative, but novelty is not the same as proven, sustainable innovation. Chinese automakers simply haven’t been around long enough to be fairly compared with American manufacturers on longevity, reliability, and long-term support. You can’t make that judgment based on how impressive a car is when it’s new. That comparison requires decades of trial and tribulation, learning from failures, refining designs, adapting to new technologies, and building the infrastructure to support vehicles long after they leave the showroom. Chinese automakers, in many ways, seem to follow a model closer to the clothing industry. New models appear, older ones are quickly phased out, and eventually sourcing parts can become difficult or impossible. The true test of a car is what happens 10, 15, or 20 years down the road. Can you still find the parts? Can a local mechanic service it? Does the manufacturer still support it? The ecosystem that allows American owners to keep older cars on the road for decades is the result of generations of manufacturing, repair networks, aftermarket suppliers, and accumulated knowledge. That ecosystem has not yet developed around Chinese cars on the same scale. So let’s not abandon the wife who has stood by us for decades for the girlfriend who just showed up with a BBL. Looking good today is not the same as standing the test of time.
