Napoleonic France, Ottoman Empire ans Russian Empire edit 🇫🇷 🇹🇷 🇷🇺 👑 During the Napoleonic era, the French Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Russian Empire were three of the most powerful and influential empires in Europe and the surrounding regions. The French Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte rose rapidly after the French Revolution, with Napoleon becoming Emperor in 1804 and building a vast empire through a series of successful military campaigns. France defeated major European powers such as Austria and Prussia and gained control or influence over large parts of Central and Western Europe, although Napoleon's attempt to dominate Europe eventually brought him into conflict with Russia. The Russian Empire, ruled by Emperor Alexander I during much of the Napoleonic Wars, was one of Europe's largest states, stretching across Eastern Europe and deep into Asia. Russia initially fought against Napoleon but later signed the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, temporarily cooperating with France. However, relations eventually collapsed, and Napoleon launched his disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, entering Russia with a huge army. The campaign ended in catastrophe for the French, as the Russian army withdrew deeper into its territory, while the harsh conditions and lack of supplies devastated Napoleon's forces. Russia then joined the coalition that eventually defeated Napoleon, contributing heavily to the downfall of the French Empire in 1814–1815. Meanwhile, the Ottoman Empire, ruled by Sultan Mahmud II during the later Napoleonic period, controlled much of southeastern Europe, Anatolia, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa. The Ottomans had been a major power for centuries, but by the late 18th and early 19th centuries they faced growing military and political pressure from European powers, particularly Russia and Austria. Napoleon also became involved in Ottoman affairs when he invaded Egypt in 1798, which was nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, hoping to weaken Britain's influence and threaten its trade routes to India. The Ottomans eventually joined Britain and Russia against France, and Napoleon's Egyptian expedition failed to establish a lasting French presence there. These three empires therefore became deeply connected through the struggles for power that shaped the early 19th century: France sought to dominate continental Europe, Russia defended and expanded its influence in Eastern Europe, and the Ottoman Empire struggled to preserve its vast but increasingly pressured territories.
