@drlouisenewson: It's good to see the NHS finally acknowledging PMDD. But why are they ignoring hormones as the root cause? PMDD symptoms are caused by fluctuating hormones and antidepressants and painkillers won't address that. We've known for decades that natural, bio identical progesterone treatments can be transformational for women with PMDD so why are so many doctors and the NHS ignoring this? #pmdd #hormonehealth #progesterone
painkillers help with joint and muscle pain as stated. Is this satire? I can't tell anymore, sorry.

I imagine is it due to that particular individuals sensitivity to the changes to the brain and it seems to be more common in those that are neurodivergent

The GPs have ZERO INTEREST. None of this is new news but they refuse to acknowledge it and act appropriately. There are practically no menopause clinics and certainly virtually no medical professionals have any training or interest in this area and that includes a disturbing amount of women in the field. Now, if it was a male problem there would be (and probably are) dedicated teams and clinics.

It is criminal the way women are left to pretty much research themselves and then are told to not ask for what could be suitable for them. Generations of women who have struggled!

I had been taking sertraline since 2022, GP suggested increasing my dose from 50mg to 200mg when my PMDD worsened. After only 3 months on HRT, and I've stopped sertraline entirely!

antidepressants being associated with long term health risks? what? and the evidence for a cyclical ssri is pretty good in pmdd tbf

I got diagnosed with PMDD and they wrote ‘depression’ on my record with them trying to prescribe for that. I complained and they changed it to ‘PMS’. It just isn’t the same, I feel like NHS Drs just don’t have any idea.

Not always so. ... sone women are progesterone intolerant even bio identical ones and pessaries. I agree that progesterone can work but please recognise that a lot of women are intolerant to all types of progesterone including pessaries. so what other options are there ? Also histamine activity is a big player on leutal phase but the endocrinal community never discuss or recognise this. Histamine intolerance * not MCAS* is real during menstrual cycle.

Is it typical for this to worsen in peri menopause as I’m noticing this and I’m not on HRT.

I got turned down for talking therapy because my mood scores were up and down while I was being assessed so I didn’t score high enough for low mood, which I told them was due to PMDD! Their male supervisor didn’t want to know or understand 🙄

I have quite bad pmdd and honestly we take those because we have no other choice. antidepressants have been helping my mood issues and SI, but don't touch the physical symptoms and have side effects. sometimes I take painkillers because I get severe joint pain before my period too. I really wish we had better options, but right now we have to make do with what we have, because even a little bit of relief is still relief.

I've been doing my own little experiment with this and I've found that because my own PMDD is linked with my allergies, taking a antihistamine each day during the luteal phase, along with b6 has helped massively.

I think it is still very frustrating that my hormonal levels are within the norm yet my brain reacts on normal changes dramatically. So what now? I will pump some hormons to fix it and create unnatural hormonal disbalance. honestly I don't get it !!!

and this is why I would rather suffer in silence! they dont treat the root cause just instantly give ssri or give the mini pill which if they checked my medical history I cannot take.

9 years!!!! And I’ve lost count of the prescriptions for antidepressants I’ve been given, and leaflets for the coil. Even when I’ve sat there and told the GP I literally examine trees to see which one I’d hang better from on those days leading up to my period… all I got was raised eyebrows and told “oh you definitely need some antidepressants”. I can not explain any lore that my entire body is affected by PMDD, literally head to toe. I go up an entire clothes size from my entire body swelling. I’m a mother of three children and it’s destroying my life.
