"I know erotica is like evil", me glancing on my sacred gay smut books on my shelf that could get me arrested: "huh"
(dw, by "could get me arrested" I don't mean they have insane gross stuff. They're banned specifically in my country for being about queer people, because gay people tend to be more happy and Russians are not allowed to be happy)

I do genuinely wish more people would be open to discussing the actual differences between male and female writing, as it’s actually very interesting and whilst its not an exact science there is a very clear difference going on here in the ways either gender attempts to connect with a reader. Male authors are known for gradious quotes and worlds with hints and references into real world politics but heavily undertoned. Whereas female authors lean more into connection and desire with very apparent messaging. Which is likely why we connect a lot better with female writers in these kinds of scenes as Male writers often kinda describe it as a reward over an experience. There’s descriptions of the partner liking it, being attractive and your character being happy about it. But it rarely tries to feel the moment, to take in both sides and leave more for the reader to choose to feel. (Again just saying this is a generalisation, I’m not gunna respond to anyone going “But umm actually I’m a x and I do Y you described as typically Y” cause yeah it’s writing styles they’re formed by experience, personality, skill and creativity. I just find it interesting to analyse common links doesn’t mean everyone follows that pattern)

At one point I actually had an addon on my browser to change certain euphemisms into ones I liked bc I was tired of seeing them 😂 The list was like. Insanely long.

I've read some absolute bangers written by trans men, so it's definitely not the testosterone. I think we teach boys/men to think and talk about sex like an achievement or conquest that centers around orgasm (often only THEIR orgasm), rather than an experience of connection and vulnerability. I'm sure sex for the sake of the physicality alone is satisfying in its own way IRL for those who like that kind of thing, but it's boring as hell to read.

I am a male as well as a fanfic author and I have written erotic scenes. Something I prioritize above all else is consent and emotional connection over the physical connection. That seems to satisfy people. The physical connection is last, that’s the difference between s3x and love.

The best erotica read tends to be written be trans men. If I had a nickel... I would have a very full coinpurse.

men and women are socialized with very different understandings of how sex is i feel. cant exactly articulate what this means but i feel like it makes sense

I definitely felt that way for awhile but I really sought it out and now maybe a third? quarter? of the MM romances I read are written by men and I've read some excellent stuff. But I'd say I do notice that sensual and sensory details are often more forward from women authors.

Woman also have a head start in the space. Woman have lead spicy books for 50 years and fanfic space is a more female lead space. The bigger problem is most men can engage with spicy fantasy through other mediums, more mainstream mediums (Video and pics). You'll find much more male authors probably in the more niche spicy tags. The ones mainstream sources are bad at representing properly.

I’ve also noticed a huge difference (for traditionally published books, not like fanfic) if the book is from a primarily female run publisher or a male one. 😒 Wonder why.

I’m great at writing them, I have some very popular fics up on AO3, but I’m a man writing almost exclusively gay male pairings. That might be part of it lol. 😂

I wondered why "male romance" isn't a genre and I realized when men write romances it's just a novel, it's just there and the self indulgence doesn't box the book into a looked-downed upon genre automatically.
and when they insert sex scenes and erotica, again it doesn't change the genre, just the rating. bc noone can actually enjoy them probably lol
