Even then, his responses were usually short, accompanied by that same straight, serious expression on his face. But somehow, luckily for you, he was one of your friends. "Ni-ki, can you pass me the salt?" Without saying anything, Ni-ki reached for the salt and handed it to you. "Thanks." He simply nodded before continuing to eat. Everyone was already used to him being like that. But you had noticed something. Ni-ki was quiet, but he was always paying attention. "Arghh! I forgot my mechanical pencil." You frustratedly dropped your pencil case onto the table. Before you could even complain further, Ni-ki had already placed an extra mechanical pencil in front of you. You blinked. "Where did you—" "I have extras." "Oh." You smiled. "Thanks, Ni-ki." He only nodded. Another day, you were walking with your friends when you suddenly stopped. "Wait. I forgot my umbrella." Before you could turn around to run back, Ni-ki held his umbrella over your head. You looked at him. "What?" "You'll get wet." "But you're going to get wet." He glanced at you. "There's enough." And he continued walking. Sometimes, it was almost annoying how he seemed to know what you needed before you even said anything. You'd complain about being hungry, and somehow a snack would appear on your desk. You'd forget your charger, and he'd silently slide his across the table. You'd complain that your hands were cold, and he'd wordlessly move closer so you could stay underneath the warmth of his jacket. He never made a big deal out of it. He just did things. And you never really questioned it. Until Chris. "Y/N!" You turned around. Jake was standing a few meters away. Your heart immediately jumped. "Oh my gosh!" You quickly fixed your hair. "Look at me! Am I pretty?" You turned toward your friends. Ni-ki looked at you from head to toe. He stared for a few seconds before giving you a small nod. Yeah. You immediately smiled. "Okay! I'm going." Ni-ki watched as you approached Chris. The two of you talked for a while. Then Chris smiled. "Do you want to grab coffee sometime?" You immediately agreed. Of course you did. Later that afternoon, you were practically bragging about it to your friends. "He invited me for coffee!" "Okay, we get it," someone laughed. "But he actually invited me!" You were smiling so brightly. Everyone was teasing you. Everyone except Ni-ki. He sat quietly beside you, listening. You didn't notice the way his eyes followed you whenever you talked about Chris. You didn't notice how his expression became just a little more serious. And you definitely didn't notice the way he looked away whenever you smiled. Weeks passed. You and Chris became serious. You were happy. So happy that you decided to surprise him with a watch. You spent an entire afternoon looking around the mall for the perfect one. While walking around, you noticed a carousel. Your eyes immediately lit up. "Oh my gosh." You walked closer. It was cute. You pulled out your phone. "One picture." You positioned yourself and opened your camera. Then you noticed someone familiar in the background. You frowned. Chris? You lowered your phone. He was sitting on one of the carousel horses. But he wasn't alone. There was a girl beside him. Chris was holding onto her, guiding her carefully while the carousel moved. You stood frozen. Maybe there was an explanation. Maybe— You waited. The carousel continued rotating. You waited for it to come around again. And there he was. Still with her. Your grip tightened around your phone. You couldn't hear anything around you anymore. Then suddenly— A hand covered your eyes. You flinched. Before you could pull it away, you heard a familiar voice. "Don't look." Your breathing trembled. "Ni-ki…" He stood behind you.
