Yes! My first job was working in a grocery store. Then I worked in restaurants & I was even a barista. This sort of interaction with the general public is FUNDAMENTAL

RN here- I always love when new hires have a serving background. They always seem to excel in patient care.

I am a lawyer in private practice. Waiting tables and tending bar has been better for my career than any job I had.

I think everyone should have to wait tables for at least 6 months at some point in their early career. It teaches you many social skills, but also helps short term memory, organization, keeping calm under pressure, and how to prioritize tasks.

Cannot stress how much working in tourism helped me as an attorney. Problem solving, people management. Waking up at 3am for work. Everything.

In college, I worked front desk at a hotel. I took every single interaction as an opportunity to work on people/ communication skills. Still think that was the best prep for my career as PCP, for communication skills.

I’m currently interviewing for medical school and I’ve written/talked about working as a seasonal housekeeper 10x more than I’ve talked about my research or clinical work

I think in today’s world, this makes more sense. The new generation does not communicate with people they’re not friendly either. I went back to school at 35. I knew everyone in every department, profs, staff, janitors, tech people. I talk and interact with them daily and they know me by name. People aren’t friendly or kind anymore. Everyone looks miserable and they don’t interact. That’s the issue. I think for those people, that type of work interaction makes sense. lol

Agreed. I tell my husband he does not deal w the general public enough when he is surprised someone does something or acts a certain way. I will say being a CNA was super helpful too. It counted as health care experience, you’re the “bottom of the ladder” and patients and health care team members treat you all types of ways.

NP here. I swear by my years of waitressing as being such a huge part of my success in this role and previously as an RN.

I always say that waiting tables is the best preparation. So much multi tasking, prioritizing, dealing with people, putting up with a lot of shit from the kitchen 😩
