He was born in 1336 in Central Asia and belonged to the Barlas tribe, which was Turkic-speaking and deeply integrated into the Turkic culture of Central Asia. Timur built one of the most powerful empires of the late 14th century, conquering large parts of Central Asia, Persia, Afghanistan, the Caucasus, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia, as well as invading northern India. He established Samarkand as his capital and transformed it into a major center of architecture, culture, and learning. Timur was a Muslim ruler who greatly supported Persian literature, art, architecture, and administration, while his political and military environment was strongly connected to the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. He is remembered as one of the most successful military commanders in history, but also for the enormous destruction and loss of life caused by many of his campaigns.
