From maiko to geiko. 舞妓さんから芸妓さんへ✨ The day a girl becomes a maiko (or geiko apprentice) is called “misedashi”. The day a maiko becomes a fully fledged geiko is called “erikae”. Geiko is the Kyoto term for geisha. This was the day Hidemai had her erikae and became a geiko. Many people turned up with cameras to take pictures of her and because Pontocho is such a narrow alley district, the space is quite limited for so many people and there can be a lot of jostling among the photographers to get the perfect shot while also keeping a respectful distance to the geiko, so she can do her rounds of greetings to the establishments. Photographers turning up for misedashi and erikae is very common and the maiko/geiko know this will happen. It’s not rude and the geiko don’t mind it, though the attention they receive on these days can make some feel a bit shy.
