Its bereft of context. The 50/50 is what keeps the relationship from deteriorating into a pure transactional relationship, and gives them space to develop together. Anything else is objectively performative or even worse zero sum where with constant score keeping.

First they aren’t married or even engaged. Costs should be split equally unless it’s a gift from one person to the other. Once they are married, put it all in a joint checking, pay the bills with our money and then pay and qual “allowance” to each other for misc expenses (hair, shopping, beer, video games, whatever).

you're dating, not married. should be split equally. you are not married. if she wants to be treated like a lady the old fashioned way, then I'd expect a diner and house cleaned when I get home. not that of have it that way, but when one expects more from the other, that's not an equal partnership
