Investigators found Betty dead, her face badly swollen and her head covered in extensive injuries. Bloodstains were discovered throughout the apartment, and there were no signs of forced entry. Nanjo's account quickly unraveled. Howarth's testimony contradicted his claim of having slept through the night, while investigators discovered blood on Nanjo's clothing. He was arrested and charged with his wife's murder. During the April 1958 trial, Betty's mother testified about the violence her daughter had previously endured. She also described visiting the morgue, where Betty's face was so badly disfigured that she could identify her only by a small scar on her wrist. When asked why she had not seen Betty for five years, Mary pointed toward Nanjo and declared, "He wouldn't let me see her." Detective William Hipple testified that Nanjo had subsequently admitted killing Betty during questioning about threats he had allegedly made following his release on bail. According to Hipple, Nanjo had expressed jealousy and resentment over money before acknowledging that he had lied to investigators. He reportedly told the detective, "I didn't mean to kill her. I blacked out." When Nanjo took the witness stand, he offered a different explanation, claiming that he had discovered Betty with another man and accidentally collided with her while attempting to stop the stranger from escaping. He insisted that he had fallen on top of Betty and that her injuries were accidental. During his testimony, Nanjo became visibly distressed and collapsed, forcing the judge to call a recess. On April 23, 1958, the jury found Nanjo guilty of second-degree murder. His request for a new trial was denied, and on November 14, he was sentenced to four to eight years in prison. He later returned to professional wrestling in Canada. Betty was 37 years old. She is buried under her maiden name, Elizabeth Kowal.
