Reform is impossible. The dsa is just another way for the system to continue. Only total revolution can bring about change

Online leftists would rather grandstand and get nothing, rather than compromise and get something.

actual socialist policies would be too controversial right now so their just playing the long game. Also I think its smart to have these smaller good policies before jumping the gun on big socialist policies. its generally good to but up actual good social capital so voters will trust you for your more ambitious plans.

The status of their policies being socialist might be debatable but they are doing wonders for the socialist name by erasing decades of red scare propaganda and deserve the coalition of purist socialist who is currently only working towards education anyway. Reform vs Revolution can still be debatable while both sides benefit from the class consciousness growth caused by exposure to the name and ideas and enmity towards the bourgeoisie.

democratic socialists and social democrats want the same things, it’s just that democratic socialists want to push further into actual socialism

the confusion comes from the era of capitalism being the end of history. when the Soviet Union was liberalizing in the 1980s and collapsed in 1991, that began the era in which politicians can openly showcase apathy towards the working class, with policy that is blatantly against their interests and them saying the quiet part out loud. It was a slow burn, Reagan had to be charismatic, George w Bush had the justification of 9/11, but soon enough we get to Trump just openly saying Africans are low IQ and blatantly talking about stealing resources and controlling other countries, saying he doesn't care about quality of life decreasing. because of the Soviet Union and the United States competing, the United States had to adopt policy that would make socialism seem pointless. Now that those policies are being nerfed and taken away, making the case for socialism is easier, however because Americans have been told basic stuff is socialism, Americans view socialism as things that can occur under social democracy. the issue with the dsa is the connection to the dnc, I see merit in democratic socialists raising class consciousness, but because of that connection to the democratic party, they get reeled in and fail when it comes to addressing imperialism, such as the nypd still working with Israel and mamdani keeping around zionists, thus what was initially anti zionism becomes liberal zionism.

Anti capitalist ideology ranges from reform to abolition. Regardless of the ideology, it seems that prominent DSA politicians are reformists. This may possibly be due to their current limitations in governance. Either way, reformist aren’t true socialists; they govern as social democrats.

The people themselves are probably socialist, but they typically moderate their policy proposals to work within capitalism. An argument could be made that by running on social democratic policies and holding democratic socialist views, they're only preventing the pressure for a socialist revolution to build, I don't necessarily agree with that or accelerationism in general. Maybe it's naive, but I think that social democracy failing to liberate the working class can be what incites the change from capitalism to socialism.

I’m pretty sure these politicians would be open to a gradual change to socialism it’s just with the size they are at now and what positions they have in government such as mamdani as a mayor they physically can’t transition to socialism on that scale yet so what they do instead is protect workers and increase living quality for workers in the meantime while building the political power to eventually carry our big changes

Yeah I’m sick of people calling universal healthcare socialism. It’s not, it’s a capitalist policy, which can only exist under capitalism. Universal healthcare in general is a terrible policy. Why not just cover the healthcare of those who can’t afford it? M it seems like a complete waste of money. Also there is no country with universal healthcare. Their systems are just about the exact same as the US. Also, Socialism would be the complete destruction of capitalism. It would stagnate society. People are selfish and that powers innovation. As in ‘if I make a better product, I can make more money, I want more money’.
