I'm in the "relationship is the intervention" camp, but a big part of why it's needed is so that those hard conversations can take place safely

Having rapport is not being liked. Dancing (done well) is rapport. Boxing is rapport. Rapport is 2 people sharing an emotional experience intentionally.

I’m still an intern but I’m glad my instructors have been very clear that we are not the clients friends, we are there to add value and they are customers. They do talk about rapport but they also grade us on confrontation , pattern recognition, Socratic questioning, etc. if the client doesn’t like that, that’s ok that’s another avenue to talk about. Why there’s resistance. Of course you have to build trust but we can’t build trust forever especially if insurance only covers like 3-8 sessions

New therapist here who is totally afraid of confrontation in any way - how do I go about bringing those conversations up without it coming off as an attack of sorts? I know rapport can do a lot of heavy lifting, but what if I bring something up that ends up breaking the rapport? This is something that’s been weighing on my mind since I’ve started.

Rapport and psychological safety in order to have hard conversations are 2 totally different things!

I use Rogerian unconditional positive regard, and then begin to open myself into having challenging conversations so that they know that I still regard them as good people unconditionally. I have found this to be very effective in helping people open up about their experiences for further processing.

I had a therapist that I found slightly abrasive and kinda didn’t love but I saw him for a year and honestly it was some of the more helpful therapy I have had!
