Best way to read x-men for beginners is giant size x-men #1 it sets the groundwork for the x men team everyone knows and loves and introduces iconic characters like nightcrawler and storm and colossus and wolverine on the team then what leads directly after it is uncanny x-men by Chris claremount issues 94-279 he made the x men what it is today and then you can carry on into the 90s era with Jim lees x-men but the late 90s isn’t really needed for beginners then grant Morrisons new x-men run 114-156 then astonishing x men joss wheedon 1-24 +giant size astonishing

Everyone will recommend Hickmans run for FF first. I recommend reading Mark Waid’s run first. Gives you such a good intro to the family. Then go straight into Hickman. Ryan North’s (2022 series) run on FF is also a really good place to start. He does a lot of stand alone issues that are absolutely beautiful.
