@cybersecuritygirl: Someone recently told me about a kid who was playing an online game when another player started messaging him. At first, it was completely normal. They talked about the game. They played together. Over time, the conversations became more personal. Then this person started asking questions about where he lived, what school he went to, when his parents were home, and eventually tried to move the conversation off the gaming platform. Thankfully, an adult caught it. But it made me think about a much bigger question: Whose job was it to protect that kid? Was it the parents, who gave him access to the game? Was it the gaming platform, which created the environment where a stranger could reach him? Or was it the government, which is supposed to create rules that protect children in the first place? That question is kicking off a new series I’m calling The Great Debate- where we take some of the biggest, messiest questions in technology and cybersecurity and argue all sides. And we’re starting with a big one: Who is responsible for protecting kids online? 👨‍👩‍👧 Parents? They know their children, control the devices, and ultimately have a responsibility to teach them how to navigate the internet safely. 🏛️ Government and policymakers? Kids are growing up in digital environments that didn’t exist when many of our laws were written. Should stronger protections be required by law? 📱 Tech and gaming platforms? They build the environments, design the algorithms, collect the data, and know how kids are interacting with their products. Should the biggest responsibility fall on them? The easy answer is probably: all three. But that’s not much of a debate.
