One of my favorite things to collect is petrified wood. There’s just something about it that never gets old. At a glance, it looks simple. Just another rock. But then you pick it up, and you start to see it. The grain. The rings. The structure of something that used to be alive, still preserved but completely transformed. Wood turned to stone. And no two pieces are ever the same. That’s what keeps me coming back to it. The variation. The colors that come from different minerals moving through it over time. Iron giving you reds and oranges. Silica locking everything in place. Sometimes you get deep blacks, yellows, even hints of purple depending on what the water carried through that piece as it fossilized. Every piece has a different history. Different chemistry. Different conditions. Different timing. Some are clean and uniform. Others are fractured, recemented, filled with minerals that came in long after the original tree was buried. You’re not just looking at one moment in time. You’re looking at multiple events layered on top of each other. And that’s what makes it interesting. It’s not just a fossil. It’s a process. A living thing buried, protected from decay, and slowly replaced mineral by mineral until what’s left is something that still holds the shape of life, but exists entirely as stone. You can hold it in your hand and see growth rings from a tree that lived millions of years ago, and at the same time see the chemistry of groundwater that moved through it long after it was gone. It’s life, time, and geology all in one piece. And that variation, that unpredictability, that’s what makes it one of my favorite things to collect. #petrifiedwood #rockhound #rocks #collect #colorado
