King Harald V of Norway has passed away at the age of 89. He was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death, and ruled for 35 years. He passes the throne to his son, the new King Haakon VIII. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said the “whole nation is in mourning” in a statement Friday, adding that King Harald had “helped us to see the best in ourselves — and in one another.” He added, “King Harald had a profound love for Norway. And Norway had a profound love for King Harald.” He was known as “all of Norway’s grandpa,” and Norwegians have been holding a vigil outside the Palace in Oslo since yesterday morning. His death followed a weeklong hospitalization for a blood infection, as well as several years of declining health that caused the King to reduce his public-facing duties. His heir, Haakon, had been serving as regent at the time of his father’s death. The 53-year-old new king attended an accession council in Oslo this morning, joined by Ingrid Alexandra. In addition to all the pro forma proclamations, King Haakon announced that he would “continue the same motto that my father, grandfather and great-grandfather chose: “Everything for Norway.” His daughter is now first in line to the throne as Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra. She will one day become ⁠Norway's first female ‌head of state since Queen Margrete I at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. There will be several days of national mourning leading up to Harald's funeral in Oslo Cathedral, after which time he will be laid to rest in the royal mausoleum of the Akershus fortress. There will not be a formal coronation ceremony for the new king; instead, if he wishes, he may choose a simple religious blessing or consecration at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, where the crown is displayed but not worn. He will also take an oath to the constitution before Norway’s parliament.
