@drleewarren: Depression 2 Depression can flatten the very circuits that let you feel hope, love, even God’s presence, without touching whether any of it is true. I hear it from someone I love who struggles with their mood: “I know all the right verses. I just can’t feel any of them anymore.” As a brain surgeon, I tell her that’s not a faith failure. That’s neurochemistry. Your feelings are chemical events. They are not verdicts on reality. That’s why the second commandment of self-brain surgery is this: feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in your brain. You are not less spiritual because your brain is exhausted. Lamentations 3:20-21, ESV: “My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope…” He doesn’t feel his way into hope. He remembers his way into it, on purpose, in the middle of despair. That’s the pivot. Not “I feel better,” but “I choose this to mind.” Faith that shows up when you feel nothing isn’t weaker faith. It might be the strongest kind there is. I’m proud of you for choosing hope when your brain won’t hand you the feeling. That’s hard and holy work. Save this for the next dark morning.
