It would be far worse than today. There would be very few large kingdoms and sub-saharan africa would be divided into possibly hundreds of tiny tribal nations which would all be severely underdeveloped. The population lf the continent would be a fraction of today due to not having access to industrial food production that allows for large population growth. Keep in mind that pre-1880 most of sub saharan africa had no european presence and most of it was at an iron age level of development or lower. From a purely development perspective Africa massively benefitted from the scramble for Africa in 1880 because it introduced industrialisation and allowed them to bypass development stages that would have taken centuries otherwise. What it would not be is a utopia of high technology and it would not be Wakanda.
