Hey there just wanted to let you guys know (medical student that works in OB/GYN) I’m seeing a lot of people here saying we keep the placenta and cord. We do not. When mum gives birth and delivers the placenta and cord our main priority is making sure ALL of it has properly detached from the uterus and there are no remnants which can cause sepsis if not expelled. When we take it away we are just examining the placenta and then we send it off to be properly discarded since it’s biological waste. Hope this helps!

They keep the cord blood. I had to specify I wanted my child to get it. Then sometimes they will invent an emergency reason why they didn’t have time to wait. I had my husband watching when my son was born to ensure he got his own blood. The doctor tried to say my child was underweight and needed oxygen and that didn’t have time to wait. But he’s still connected to his cord so why would he need oxygen. They wanted me to sign a form really quickly saying they could have the placenta and cord blood. How can you ask a woman that while creating a distressing scenario. We said no, we waited and now my little guy is a healthy 7 year old.

I need to reiterate for all birthing people… that sometimes doctors/nurses will say something might be “unsafe” in America, but it might be normal and safe in other countries. Another example, the pregnancy glucose test in America has lower thresholds than in the EU. Do your research and advocate for yourself!

hospitals in america are run upon capitalistic greed. the faster they perform procedures the more patients those doctors and nurses can service.. of course they will do things that will save them time. its sad but its a fact. if I ever decide to have a kid im making sure to befriend a obgyn so they know our best interest is at heart and that to spend more time letting this happen if its a true thing.
