@of_40_mtca_an4ovy: Type 90🇯🇵 | Edit | Type 90 is a third-generation Japanese main battle tank (MBT) adopted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) in 1990 to replace the aging Type 61 and Type 74 tanks. It was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in cooperation with German engineers, which is why its design and layout share significant similarities with the Leopard 2A4. ​Key Features & Design ​Armament & Autoloader: The tank is fitted with a 120mm Rheinmetall L44 smoothbore gun (produced in Japan under license). A standout feature of the Type 90 is its bustle-mounted autoloader located in the turret rear. This reduced the crew to 3 members (commander, gunner, driver) and enables a firing rate of up to 15 rounds per minute (with a reload time of roughly 4 seconds). ​Mobility & Suspension: Powered by a 10-cylinder two-stroke Mitsubishi 10ZG32WT diesel engine generating 1,500 hp, the ~50.2-tonne tank achieves an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of nearly 30 hp/t and a top speed of 70 km/h. Its hybrid hydropneumatic suspension allows adjusting ground clearance as well as pitching the hull forward, backward, or sideways—an essential feature for engaging targets in mountainous terrain. ​Armor Protection: The Type 90 utilizes welded composite armor containing ceramic elements (developed by Kyoto Ceramic Co.). The front of the turret features a distinct flat, boxy profile. ​Fire Control System (FCS): It was equipped with an advanced FCS for its era, featuring thermal optics, a laser rangefinder, a digital ballistic computer, and automatic target tracking capabilities.Operational Constraints & Legacy ​The primary limitation of the Type 90 came from its weight. At over 50 tonnes, transporting the tank across Japan presented severe infrastructure challenges: most civil bridges outside the northern island of Hokkaido could not support its weight, and its dimensions limited rail transit. ​As a result, the majority of Type 90 tanks were deployed to the island of Hokkaido (primarily within the 7th Armored Division).
