When it comes to audiobook coaching there are a lot of options out there. Do you have to have coaching to become a narrator? Not at all. Do I recommend it? You betcha! This is a career where things are always evolving and changing and you want to make sure you’re adapting with it. You might be brand new and need some help figuring out where to start, what equipment and DAW to get, where to audition, how to act for audiobooks, how to get your files up to spec, or any number of other things. You might be mid-career or seasoned but want to keep improving your performance or make your auditions stand out. Audiobook narration is first and foremost acting. It is both an achievable and accessible career, but that does not mean it’s easy. In fact I’m just going to go ahead and say it - it’s hard and it takes a lot of work, hustle, and grit and anyone who tells you any differently is either lying intentionally, or doesn’t know any better yet, but either way they are wrong. I put this post together with the intention of helping narrators or narrator hopefuls find amazing people and tools to help them on their narration journey. This is NOT an exhaustive list, none of the coaches named even know I’ve done this and my recommendations come from a combination of my own personal experience, research, and peer recs. To me a good coach has years of experience, hundreds of audiobooks, a great reputation within the community, and has the type of personality to really want their students to succeed. I’ve also considered the costs of each person/event and compared it to what a narrator would get out of it and they are all actually beyond generous. I’ve also included a lot of frẽė resources! The audiobook narrator community is smaller than you think, incredibly welcoming, and filled with people wanting you to succeed. Coaching isn’t always just about learning something new.
