Why landing calculations are so important ✈️ Before every landing, the pilots will independently calculate the stopping distance based on the latest weather and runway conditions. Aircraft such as the Boeing 737 have automatic braking systems which allow the crew to select a pre programmed deceleration rate. The crew would select the most appropriate autobrake setting based on the results of their landing calculations. Newer aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and A380 have a Brake To Vacate (BTV) function. This simplifies the process and allows pilots to select the desired runway exit point on an electronic chart and the aircraft will then automatically apply the correct amount of brake pressure to achieve a safe stop by that exit point. The system also displays a number of other useful pieces of information. If you take a look at the top left corner of the display, you’ll see ”ROT” in white. This is the Runway Occupancy Time - how much time in seconds that the aircraft will be on the runway to achieve that exit point. Below that, you have “TURNAROUND”. This show the pilots how much time the aircraft will need on the ground to allow the brakes enough time to cool before a takeoff can be commenced. If the aircraft were to depart without the required brake cooling time and the takeoff had to be rejected, the brakes could overheat, resulting in brake fade and a possible runway excursion, To reduce the turnaround brake cooling time, reverse thrust can be used on landing. This reduces the brake pressure needed to achieve the required stopping distance and therefore results in cooler brakes 👌 #landing #a380 #a350 #airbusa380lovers #heavyaircraft
