I compared the published ingredient lists of Nivea Creme (about $9 a tin) and La Mer Creme de la Mer (about $200 an ounce). Five of the first seven ingredients are the same: mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin, microcrystalline wax and lanolin alcohol. Positions 2, 3 and 4 match exactly. Why does ingredient order matter? Lists roughly follow concentration, so the top of the list is most of what you are rubbing in. Both jars are built on the same occlusive base: oils and waxes that seal water into your skin. So what does $200 buy? Mostly the parts that are different: La Mer opens with its fermented algae extract, plus texture, fragrance and the ritual. Those can be real to you.
