Anytime this happens to me I apologize / tell them I’m hard of hearing and get them to repeat it slowly till I understand. That way it looks like a me issue and I don’t make them feel bad accidentally lol.

literally last week i thought a customer asked if we had a different size in something so i said “i’ll go look in the back for you” but apparently she didn’t want a different size she just wanted to return it and she went up to my coworker saying “a girl just walked away from me can you help me” i came back a few seconds later cause i couldn’t find the size and she was already gone and my coworker told me what happened
