Michael Dorsey is a filmmaker who produced the 2015 documentary "Murder Rap: Inside the Biggie and Tupac Murders." Dorsey also worked with Mario Diaz on the 2018 docuseries "The Death Row Chronicles." Dorsey testified in Davis' murder trial on Friday (August 21, day 5). Jurors heard about 35 minutes of an interview Diaz conducted with Davis in 2017 that Dorsey recorded as he listened in another room. The recording includes Dorsey's comments to himself and the sounds of him texting questions to Diaz. Jurors will continue listening to it when Dorsey re-takes the witness stand on Monday (August 24, day 6). Before the recording played, Dorsey testified about his own documentary and how he came to work with retired Los Angeles Police Department Detective Greg Kading. "I came across a couple of articles about Greg Kading's "Murder Rap" book, and they had some quotes from Keffe D's 2008 proffer in them, and it just sounded legit to me. I don't cater to conspiracy theories, but it sounded very well backed up, and it sounded like the real deal. So I just reached out to Greg Kading, and asked if he was interested in making a documentary, and he said, 'Yeah,'" Dorsey said. "And as you were kind of researching all of this this information, what is your ultimate goal in creating a documentary?" asked Marc DiGiacomo, the chief deputy district attorney in Clark County, Nevada. "Well, there's like the kind of philosophical aspect of it, which is my goal is to get it to truth, but also my goal is to tell the public a good story, something that I think is of the public interest that they should know," Dorsey said. "And in this case, it seems like they had solved this murder, and yet the world was carrying on like it was still unsolved, and like we still didn't know what happened. And it was like, 'It sounds like we do know what happened,' and so that was my goal, was to put that out there," he continued. "Did you have any concerns about accusing anybody of murder?" DiGiacomo asked. "Absolutely. I had concerns for my own safety, accusing a gang member from a violent street gang of committing a murder, and then also just my own financial concerns, since Puffy was going to be implicated in it as well," Dorsey said, referring to Sean Diddy" Combs. "Taking on someone who was at the time heading towards becoming a billionaire, and who at that time did not have the public backlash that he's faced the last few years. He still had a pretty good, clean image at the time. So I was concerned about both." Combs lawyer Howard Weitzman, a Los Angeles legend who died in 2021, warned documentary distributor Apple TV "that the film was defamatory towards his client Puffy Combs, and that they had like five business days to pull it down" but it was up to Dorsey what to do, "and we said no, we're leaving it up, and that was the last we ever heard of it." "So you never wound up getting sued by Puffy, do you?" DiGiacomo asked. "We were never sued by Puffy, no," Dorsey said. #law #court #crime
