These are just some of the proofs from the Qur’an, the Sunnah, the Sahabah, and the consensus of those who followed them in guidance showing that abandoning prayer removes a person from Islam. This matter is grave—we ask Allah to keep us firm, obedient to Him, and steadfast in maintaining our Salah. In fact, this position is so firmly established among Ahl al-Sunnah that they considered anyone who opposed it to be from the Murji'ah: In Fatḥ al-Bārī by Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī: "Many scholars of the People of Hadith (Ahl al-Ḥadīth) hold the view that the one who abandons prayer becomes a disbeliever, and Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh narrated a consensus (ijmāʿ) among them on this point—to the extent that he considered the position of those who say: 'A person does not disbelieve by abandoning these pillars so long as he affirms them verbally' to be among the doctrines of the Murjiʾah. Likewise, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah said: 'The Murjiʾah classified the abandonment of obligatory duties (farāʾiḍ) as a sin equivalent to committing prohibited acts (maḥārim). Yet the two are not equal; for intentionally committing prohibited acts without deeming them lawful is disobedience (maʿṣiyah), whereas abandoning obligatory duties without ignorance or a valid excuse is disbelief (kufr).' Ḥarb reported that Isḥāq [ibn Rāhawayh] said: 'The Murjiʾah went to extremes to the point that a group among them began saying: "Whoever abandons the prescribed prayers, fasting Ramadan, Zakat, Hajj, and obligations in general—without denying their obligatoriness—we do not declare him a disbeliever. His matter is deferred to Allah, since he still affirms [the faith]."
