From Israel's founding until 1977, the country was continuously governed by left-wing and labor Zionist parties (first Mapai, then the Alignment), led by figures like David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir. The political landscape shifted dramatically in 1977 (known as The Ha'apacha or upheaval) when Likud won the election and Menachem Begin became prime minister, ending decades of left-wing dominance. This election fundamentally transformed Israeli identity, moving the country from a secular, socialist-leaning state controlled by a European-descended elite to a nationalist, traditionalist, and market-oriented society. While secular himself, Begin showed deep respect for traditional Jewish heritage. This ended Labor's long-standing alliance with moderate religious factions and brought religious and ultra-Orthodox parties into closer power sharing, gradually elevating traditional and religious values within civic Israeli identity. The aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War brought biblical lands into the national consciousness. Begin’s Revisionist Zionism championed the concept of Eretz Israel HaShlema (the Greater Land of Israel), making control over the West Bank a central pillar of right-wing political identity rather than a temporary security buffer. Yitzhak Rabin led Labor back to power in 1992, followed briefly by Shimon Peres, and later Ehud Barak in 1999. Barak's government collapsed in 2001, marking the final time a classic left-wing leader held the office of Prime Minister. But with assassination of Peres and the intifadas and more specifically the violence of the 2nd intifada, resulted in the Israeli electorate leaching to the right because they saw no partner for peace. This along with a demographic shift, the voting population has grown significantly more conservative, traditional, and religious due to higher birth rates among the Ultra-Orthodox (Haredim) and Nationalist-Religious sectors, as well as the political leanings of Mizrahi Jews and the massive wave of post-Soviet immigrants in the 1990s, who overwhelmingly favored right-wing or nationalist parties

I’ve distanced myself from Bibi since his friends assassinated Rabin and he was explicit about being ok with that.
