It’s going to be really awkward when gen alpha in 12 years talks about how corporate Memphis, little heads on big bodies drawings, was “when the world was better”.

Well duh. We’re aware these aesthetics were corporate, but that’s not why we like them. We like them because things weren’t so flat and one dimensional back then. Corporations weren’t as comically evil when these aesthetics were at their prime. These aesthetics made it seem like they actually cared and genuinely wanted to appeal to consumers, and with the products in question actually being good quality then only amplified that. People want that sort of thing back and that’s why they’ve attached themselves to aesthetics like Frutiger Aero

I've been knew that the designs are from corporate, but a reason why it's being sought after is because back then corps were actually paying artists and graphic designers to flesh out something visually pleasing to consumers. In the age of AI and Corporate Memphis, the consumers yearn for complex visuals in their marketing.

Betty Corrello/B.C. Dolce :
The optimism of 00s design is what makes it so captivating. Things looked like shit in the 00s. Everything was still kind of brown and greige in the US. But then these design systems showed up and directly challenged the idea that we had to live in a world that was outdated, run down, and faded. These styles also represent/ed a time when we, culturally, invested in the arts. You could go to art school and then get a really nice ad agency job, where you were paid to illustrate and design professionally! And when a brand did something really cool, it was a reflection of that.

This doesn’t exactly turn me away from the style. Stemming from a corporation doesn’t mean that there weren’t creative minds getting a chance to use advertising as a means of making something beautiful. It might be fueled a lot by nostalgia but there are a lot of older products and advertisements that prioritized creative integrity rather than being easily digested and that’s what people retroactively latch onto.

Oh yeah i personally always thought frutiger aero was corporate (hell it often features offices) but the thing is that it incorporated optimism and a promise of a bright future 😅 but yeah, a lot of people romantize it because of nostalgia, and i can't lie I do too

It’s not as if the corporate overlords are making money off of old aesthetics. They’re doing everything they can to make everything look like the lobby of an office building.

All I know is, in 20 years, I am not going to miss the flat simple modern aesthetic being pushed right now.

Old aesthetics are also looked back on nostalgicly because we arent bombarded with them today. Frutigero aero can be appreciated today because it isn't plastered everywhere. If you lived in the 2000s youd be tired of seeing frutigero aero everywhere similar to how today everyone is tired of corporate minimalism. People were excited of minimalism and the IOS 7 update because of how much frutigero aero and skew morphism we had in the 2000s.
