The dirt is this very thin alkaline powder for the dirt. Its corrosive. It’s hard on rubber seals, it STICKS to surfaces, it gets in everywhere. There are windstorms that kick up choking clouds of it. It is a bitch to clean and I don’t think any vehicle that goes is ever the same.

Been going since the early '90s — here's the science: playa dust is a fine alkali powder, corrosive by nature. It gets in anywhere oxygen can reach and just stays — I had dust from '94 still turning up in '98. It doesn't wash out, it eats away at things over time. If you're going yearly, just dedicate a vehicle to it. Don't expect one to come back the same.

Its that bad. Especially if the guests dont clean it cause its a rental, theres atleast a handful that will be totalled afterwards. I wouldnt say you need to cancel them for the people who arent going but maybe add in a contract either saying the renter is not going to take it to burning man or that if they do take it they will be responsible for all repairs and cleaning fees even up to the full cost of the RV if its ruined

we used to rent them at a job i had and they quit renting them to locals, only the high end clients could afford them because they come back thrashed and coated in playa dust, not to mention the crazy sex toys they leave behind for us to clean out of them, there's no way I would, just saying, plus they take a really good deep clean to get them rentable again

I see this whole page somewhere else that is dedicated to being excited to rent their RVs out because even though they come back dirty and it’s a lot of work is one of their best times of the year. So you just make sure you have a hefty cleaning fee. I wouldn’t turn down a bunch of people wanting to rent something just over a little dust and dirt.

Their ways to do it in which the RV does not get destroyed. However, the amount of effort that you need to engage in to really protect it from the alkaline dust is really significant. If you were taking your own RV to burning man, you could probably be fairly certain it would be OK at the end of it. However, if you are renting it, your renters may not use the same amount of precaution that you would. After all, it’s not their problem. The Playa dust gets everywhere. Certainly things like air conditioners, and all air inlets need to be thoroughly inspected. I would assume you will have a few thousand dollars at least of costs even if they are diligent. If they are not diligent, it will be worse.

The dust is the worst. -someone who lived in burning man’s way and had to deal with them coming and going. The dust sticks to everything and takes forever to wash off the roads and floors. The locals hate burning man🥰

My cousin had to junk her brand new rv after going and her insurance refused to pay out a couple of years back. there was a storm and the dust and water turned into basically concrete and got in the engine and interior. she had to get towed to some middle of nowhere town.
