@darlene_liebman: Have you ever wondered why some streets on the Lower East Side are so unusually wide? It's not an accident. Each one tells a different chapter of New York City's history. Take Delancey Street. Today it's one of Manhattan's widest roads, but it wasn't always that way. In the late 1890's, the city widened it to connect to the new Williamsburg Bridge. Entire blocks were demolished, and thousands of residents were displaced to make room for what was then the world's longest suspension bridge. Just one block west is Allen Street. Its wide, tree-lined median exists for a completely different reason. The Second Avenue Elevated Railway once ran overhead, casting the street into darkness. In the 1930's, the city widened the street to bring light and air back to the neighborhood. The train disappeared decades ago, but the boulevard remains. Then there's Chrystie Street, widened to move traffic between the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. Today, it borders Sara D. Roosevelt Park, giving many nearby homes the rare luxury of permanent open views in Manhattan. Three streets. Three completely different reasons for being wide. A bridge. A train. A traffic plan.
