Dragons were used as weapons by both sides, causing destruction on a scale rarely seen in Westerosi history. The war gradually weakened House Targaryen and reduced the number of living dragons. Aegon participated directly in the conflict and eventually suffered severe injuries. During the fighting, he was badly burned and crippled after being attacked while riding the dragon Sunfyre. His physical condition deteriorated, but he continued to claim the throne and refused to abandon his struggle against Rhaenyra. Despite his injuries, Aegon remained determined to defeat his half-sister. The war eventually turned against Rhaenyra, and she was forced to flee King’s Landing. Aegon’s forces later captured her at Dragonstone. He ordered Rhaenyra’s death, believing that eliminating her would finally end her claim to the throne. However, the conflict did not end immediately, and resistance to Aegon’s rule continued. Aegon’s reign became increasingly unstable as the consequences of the war spread throughout the kingdom. The destruction caused by the Dance weakened the Targaryen dynasty politically and militarily.
