@learnfromchrist: Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers. That gets treated as avoiding conflict entirely. It actually meant walking straight into it. The Greek word, eirenopoios, appears exactly once in the entire New Testament. Eirene, peace. Poieo, to make. Not someone who happens to be calm, someone who actively steps between two sides and makes peace exist where there was none. The night Jesus is arrested is the one recorded moment he does this in real time. A mob arrives carrying swords and clubs. Peter draws a blade and strikes one of them, cutting off a man's ear. For one second, there are two armed sides in that garden, and Jesus is standing directly between them. He does not let Peter's violence stand, and he does not let the mob's aggression stand either. He tells Peter to put his sword away, then heals the man Peter just struck. He is not choosing a team. He is standing in the middle of a fight neither side will end, and ending it himself, from both directions at once.
