@daily.historian: The Republic of China was founded on mainland China in 1912 after the Xinhai Revolution ended Qing imperial rule. Sun Yat-sen envisioned a constitutional state, but political stability collapsed under Yuan Shikai, descending into the Warlord Era (1916–1928). Frustration with national disunity and foreign imperialism sparked the 1919 May Fourth Movement, galvanizing modern nationalism and spurring both the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Chinese Communist Party. Chiang Kai-shek unified the country nominally in 1928, inaugurating the Nanjing Decade (1927–1937). The Nationalist government enacted legal, financial, and infrastructural modernizations, but struggled with rural poverty, corruption, and political repression. Imperial Japan's 1937 invasion halted these reforms, forcing a wartime retreat inland to Chongqing and inflicting catastrophic casualties and economic destruction. Postwar civil war between Nationalists and Communists ended in Nationalist collapse amid hyperinflation and strategic battlefield losses. Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in October 1949, while Chiang Kai-shek evacuated the Republic of China administration to Taiwan in December 1949, where its governance framework continues.
