A lot of the features we think of as simply “how someone looks” were shaped over thousands of years by where our ancestors lived. One of the biggest forces? The sun. In places with intense UV radiation, higher levels of melanin offered protection from that radiation. In places with much weaker UV exposure, lighter pigmentation became more common over generations, helping the body make enough vitamin D with less sunlight. And it gets even more interesting when you start looking at eyes, hair, noses and body proportions. Some traits became more common in certain populations because of climate. Others spread through migration, isolation, genetic drift and people simply choosing partners over thousands of generations. Which means two people standing next to each other today can carry physical clues from completely different journeys through human history.
