I don’t understand how removing a company making many billions of dollars in revenue per year between the person and their healthcare doesn’t translate to lower overall costs

Countries with national health care spend less on health care per capita and have better outcomes. Why be so doubtful?

Same with Canada, France, sweeden, Norway. That’s why they all have supplemental insurance to get back to baseline or just fly to the United States

Every single time we’re told how much something is going to cost and that it will save money, they’re wrong and wrong by a lot. Just look at Medicare and the ACA.

you are honestly between a few other channels on here one of my favorite commentators. you are like a brutal chemo for some of the worst populism that seems to be sweeping every platform. Always thorough, informative, and sceptical in a world that feels like we are spiraling down by the lowest common denominator. anyways TY.

You might be right that this calls into question the exact numbers they come up with, but my understanding is that M4A would act as a kind of monopsony that would have much greater leverage in negotiations than the VA, so they would be able to cover much more at much lower costs. If Costco was the only grocery store in the u.s. they’d get better deals on more stuff

I thought you were going to address the methodology used to get the 40% number but you just asserted your assessment of the price negotiation strategy and why you think it works. I hope your future videos provide what you think the appropriate models and methods are instead of just "calling in to question" other approaches. "All models are wrong, some are useful."

per capita healthcare expenditure has been studied to death. every other first world country spends less than us and almost always has better health outcomes. they don't have an army of billing staff in every office navigating hundreds of plans. businesses don't have to have an entire team dedicated to figuring out and managing a plan for their employees. and, yes, they negotiate drug prices which are objectively lower in other countries across the board.

Can you do a video on how you would propose bringing healthcare costs down? I think that would be interesting.

This was probably a poor framing. But you are assuming that the VA, if it were negotiating for all Americans, and not just veterans, would not have more leverage to negotiate discounts and coverage for more drugs than it can presently. Other national healthcare systems negotiate drug access and prices at a national level and achieve massive discounts relative to the US market. There are probably many competing effects, but the leverage of negotiating for the entire US market should not be underestimated.

Medicare does not negotiate at all with pharma companies. It is part of why medications are so expensive in the US. Why would medicare start negotiating once it is given to everyone?

Oops! I forgot the section showing 84% of VA enrollees have other health insurance. That’s from a VA survey.

I mean the US already has the highest healthcare spending per capita in the world and has very poor outcomes among developed countries and other countries who have public health systems. But M4A is bad?

If everyone was able to get a deal then nobody will. Single payer insurance cannot negotiate because there is no one to make up the difference on. The V.A. get a deal because we pay more.

when you say the VA doesn't cover all meds do you mean all brands of a specific med? it sounds like you're saying VA patients can't get certain treatments because that medication is not available there.
